It’s your treasure, your prize possession. It’s the symbol of your eternal love, devotion crystallized into gold and diamond. It’s hard to imagine it getting stolen or lost. And yet it happens, way more often than you think it would.

At Hamra Jewelers, we understand what our rings can mean to our clients. We know how meaningful they are. They aren’t just beautiful works of craftsmanship: They are memories, vows, and emotions. To see something that precious get damaged or lost would be devastating. But don’t worry! There are things you can do to protect your ring and keep it protected. Here are four ways you can keep your wedding ring safe.

safe storage

The safest place for your wedding ring is on your finger. If you must take it off, you should always put the ring in the same designated space. Place the ring in a jewelry box or a soft cloth pouch. Don’t store it next to other gems because diamonds can scratch other jewels and metals.

Be careful when traveling with your ring. You’re most likely to lose your ring while you’re away from home. Take your box or pouch with you and make sure you place it somewhere secure. If you must take it off, be careful not to put it near a sink or any open holes or slots where the ring could fall in. You’ll also want to be careful with your ring if you’re going swimming: Water can make your fingers shrink. You don’t want to have your ring fall off your finger while you’re swimming.

insurance

Nobody wants to imagine that they’ll lose their wedding ring, but it could happen. If it does you want to be prepared for the worst. Consider getting your ring insured. Get your jeweler to appraise your ring before you talk to your insurance company. The additional cost of the insurance is nothing compared to what replacing the ring out of pocket would cost you.

cleaning

You’ll want to clean your ring regularly to keep it in good condition. You also want to clean it up because your ring will naturally collect oils from your skin, lotions and everyday dirt from being on your finger constantly. Clean the ring by soaking it in warm water with a mild dishwashing liquid. Scrub the ring with a soft toothbrush. If that doesn’t work, soak your diamond ring in equal parts cold water and ammonia for half an hour and then let it air dry. Be sure to only use ammonia on diamonds: Ammonia can be harmful to other stones.

There are also brand-name jewelry cleaners available that can help you clean off your ring. Ask your jeweler if there’s a particular cleaner they’d recommend. Don’t use the wrong kind of cleaner! You don’t want to end up tarnishing and damaging your ring.

inspections

Rings are built to last, but they are far from indestructible. They can face wear and tear over the years. The prongs holding the diamonds in place could get damaged. The ring itself could wear down and get compromised. The diamond could get loose and fall off. Replacing a lost diamond or ruined ring can be expensive: You’ll be saving yourself a lot of time and money by getting your ring inspected regularly to make sure everything is in its proper place.
